Callejas Gallery
About the Artworks
Juan Callejas’ work emerges from classical figuration while deliberately placing it within a contemporary context. The portraits and urban scenes in his work do not depict specific individuals or situations. Instead, they emerge from inner images, emotional memory, and decisions made within an open working process. In this sense, the portrait becomes a field of exploration rather than a representation of identity, where personal experience and broader social dynamics converge.
Central to his practice is a highly original and experimental approach to material and technique. Callejas works with non-standardized, partly industrial materials such as fiberglass mesh, whose open structure allows transparency and permeability, giving the image a spatial and permeable quality. In many works, the material functions simultaneously as support, structure, and surface. Without a conventional background, the image seems to exist almost freely in space, creating the impression of a painting suspended between material and environment.
Callejas produces his own acrylic paints according to personal recipes and works with pigments from Colombia, which he mainly applies with a palette knife in a technique developed over many years. Through layering, transparency, and varied surfaces, multiple levels of perception emerge.
Each series explores a different aspect of the human beeing, capturing its essence through his unique technique.
